Former Director General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council, Akin Osuntokun, has joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
According to NAN, Osuntokun left the Labour Party because of the activities of the “internal saboteurs” within the party.
He alleged that those in control of the LP were only interested in selling the party to the highest bidder, adding that such conduct was not in the interest of genuine members.
“Yes, it is correct. I am now in ADC,” Osuntokun was quoted as saying.
He also said those he joined the LP with — which is the Peter Obi group — had already exited the party.
He added that the declaration of Nenadi Usman as the valid national chairman of the LP, alongside the sack of the Julius Abure-led national working committee, had worsened uncertainty within the party.
According to him, the Abure-led NWC’s decision to appeal the judgement had made the situation more unpredictable.
Osuntokun said the ADC has the most credible political platform at the moment, saying Nigeria needs a strong opposition to prevent a one-party system.
He noted that the ADC currently has the greatest potential to function as a formidable opposition platform.
Osuntokun added that although he had already decided to join the ADC, the move was fast-tracked by Rotimi Amaechi, former minister of transportation.
The former LP chieftain said he was not new to the ADC, noting that he was among those who formed the party from the Coalition for Nigerian Movement led by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
With the next general election coming up next year, opposition figures have adopted ADC as the party to which they would unseat President Bola Tinubu.
Some prominent figures in the ADC include Atiku Abubakar, the former vice-president; Peter Obi, LP’s 2023 presidential candidate; David Mark, the former senate president; and Rauf Aregbesola, former minister of interior; among others.
