The transfer, pending receipt of the player’s International Transfer Certificate (ITC), was confirmed by the club on Wednesday, January 22. As per policy, terms of the deal remain undisclosed. Opeyemi, 21, brings promising experience to Cincinnati after three years in Portugal, where he showed his potential. While primarily representing FC Vizela’s U23 side, he also made his senior team debut in Liga Portugal. Notably, in 2022, Opeyemi played a key role in Vizela’s 1-0 victory over Rio Ave FC in the top flight. With the U23s, the talented midfielder made 27 appearances, scoring seven goals and providing one assist across all competitions. His standout performances during the 2023 U23 Taça Revelação, Portugal’s domestic knockout competition, included three goals in the group stage and an impressive brace against CF Estrela Amadora. Opeyemi’s loan spell at SC Covilhã in Portugal’s Liga 3 during the 2023-2024 season marked his most productive campaign yet. He delivered three goals and five assists in just 12 league appearances. On the international stage, Opeyemi has donned the Nigerian jersey at various youth levels. A notable highlight came in 2019 when he featured in the FIFA U17 World Cup in Brazil. He started two of Nigeria’s group stage matches, helping the team top Group B and advance to the Round of 16. The midfielder has also earned caps with Nigeria’s U23 side, further solidifying his reputation as an emerging talent. Opeyemi has joined FC Cincinnati’s training camp in Clearwater, Florida, as the team gears up for the 2025 MLS season. His addition is expected to strengthen the squad and provide a dynamic option in midfield.
