A street car race allegedly organised by suspected internet fraudsters (“Yahoo boys”) has claimed five lives in the Ipara area of Remo, Ogun State.
The crash occurred around 2:00 p.m. on Monday, August 11, 2025, after a N30,000 wager was placed on the contest’s winner.
According to eyewitnesses, one of the racers lost control of an unregistered Lexus while speeding towards Fidiwo.
The vehicle veered off the road and rammed into a roadside shop, killing two residents — identified as Akeem Ashiru and Shina Badejo — instantly.
The driver and two passengers were trapped in the wreckage before being rescued and rushed to separate hospitals with serious injuries.
The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, Babatunde Akinbiyi, confirmed that the driver died at the scene, while the two passengers later died in hospital.
“At about 13:40 hrs, a lone fatal accident occurred near the Owolowo area, Ipara Remo, involving an unregistered Lexus.
The driver lost control at high speed, hitting two bystanders. The driver, along with the two pedestrians, died instantly, while the other two occupants succumbed to injuries in hospital,” he said.
Videos from the scene circulating on social media showed lifeless bodies on the ground, the mangled vehicle lodged in a damaged building, and residents wailing over the fatalities.
The fatal race comes barely a day after there were reports of another deadly incident in Abeokuta, where a man fell from a moving motorcycle and was crushed by an oncoming Volvo truck.
