Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets and World Cup-bound Flamingos have brought a touch of class and excitement to the 22nd National Sports Festival currently underway in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Footynaija.com reports.

Both youth national teams are participating under the IJA (Invited Junior Athletes) initiative, a bold new concept that has won applause from fans and stakeholders since the Games kicked off.

The five-time world champions Golden Eaglets have already booked a place in the quarter-finals of the football event.

The Nigeria U17 lads edged Edo State 2-1 on Monday, with goals from Abdulmuiz Adeleke and Mohammed Imrana, before playing out a goalless draw against Delta State on Tuesday.

The Flamingos, who secured qualification for their eighth FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup after defeating South Africa and Algeria, began their campaign with a 0-0 draw against Abia State.

On Tuesday, they bounced back with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Delta State, thanks to a decisive strike from defender Jumai Adebayo.

The Flamingos will now face Lagos State on Thursday before wrapping up their Group B fixtures with a clash against Enugu State on Saturday.
