A 27-year-old man named Damilola Orelaja has been apprehended by the Ogun State Police Command for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in the Omu Ijebu area of Ogun State.

The police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the arrest yesterday.

Orelaja reportedly lured the victim into his apartment on Araromi Street, Ọmu-Ijebu, around 8:00 PM on July 22, 2024, while she was returning from running errands.

Following a report made by the victim’s father, identified only as Wasiu, officers from the Omu division acted swiftly.

“The suspect was arrested immediately after the case was reported to us on July 23. He will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for prosecution,” Odutola stated.

Recall also that a police officer in Lagos was recently accused of raping a 17-year-old girl inside a police station while she was there to report her missing phone.

In light of the rising number of gender-based crimes in the country, various civil society organizations have called for prompt justice for victims while stressing the need for community engagement to tackle these issues.

In a recent interview, Dr. Uwemedimo Esiet, co-founder and director of Action Health Incorporated, highlighted the importance of “increasing public education and awareness” to empower communities to protect the rights of children and young people regarding their rights to life, association, education, and fundamental human rights.
