WATCH THE VIDEO HERE THE Governor of Ogun state, Dapo Abiodun has announced plans to introduce a price control mechanism in the state, along with the reintroduction of bulk food purchases. He also stated that all market levies, except for development and environmental levies, will be suspended, as these are intended for market development. During a meeting with market leaders, led by Iyaloja General, Chief Yemisi Abass at the Governor’s Office in Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun revealed that to combat rising food prices, the state will soon launch the Gateway Trading Company, formerly known as the Bulk Purchasing Company. This initiative will ensure food items are available at more affordable prices across the state’s four zones. He explained that the Gateway Trading Company will buy food items in bulk and resell them at significantly lower prices to the public. The governor also announced the formation of a market enforcement task force to eliminate illegal fees, coercion, and intimidation in the markets. Governor Abiodun emphasized that only development and environmental levies will be permitted, and illegal fees such as loading and offloading taxes will be banned. He warned that those found collecting unauthorized levies would face legal consequences. Additionally, he pledged to address exorbitant rents on market stalls imposed by developers. The governor also committed to providing support to farmers through grants, loans, and farm tools. He mentioned plans for low-interest loans for market traders under the Ogun Empowerment Scheme, which is in its final stages. Finally, he tasked the Ministry of Environment, Ogun State Waste Management Agency, and the Ministry of Women Affairs with improving waste management in the state’s markets. In response, Chief Yemisi Abass lauded the governor for his efforts to improve the welfare of the people by engaging with market leaders.
