The Ogun state government has expressed sympathy to the relatives and associates of the two foreign nationals who lost their lives in the accident involving Anthony Joshua.
The tragic incident occurred on Monday when a Lexus SUV conveying Joshua rammed into a stationary truck near the Sinoma section of the Sagamu corridor on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway.
The crash happened around midday along the Makun stretch of the highway in Ogun State, with Joshua escaping with minor injuries.
Reports indicated that the boxing star was travelling from Lagos to Sagamu alongside three other occupants when their vehicle struck the parked truck.
In a statement issued by Kayode Akinmade, special adviser on information and strategy, the state government confirmed that two male foreign nationals died instantly at the scene.
Akinmade stated that the deceased have been deposited at Livewell Morgue in Sagamu, while Joshua and the driver were rescued by security operatives attached to his convoy and taken for medical care.
“The fatal accident occurred along the busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, within the Makun axis of Ogun State, and sadly claimed the lives of two persons. Anthony Joshua and three other individuals were reportedly travelling from Lagos to Sagamu at the time of the incident,” the statement reads.
“Preliminary reports indicate that two male foreign nationals died on the spot. Their remains have since been deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Sagamu. Anthony Joshua and the driver of the vehicle were promptly rescued by security personnel attached to his convoy and taken to a hospital, where they are currently receiving medical attention.”
Authorities explained that the damaged vehicle has been transferred to the Sagamu Motor Traffic Division, while arrangements are ongoing to remove the truck for comprehensive investigation.
The state government commiserated with the grieving families and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured.
Government authorities also appealed to motorists to drive responsibly and obey traffic regulations, especially during festive periods when vehicular movement is usually heavy.
