THE Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ogun State under the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Barrister ‘Niyi Ijalaye, has passed away.

Ijalaye reportedly collapsed and died in Abuja yesterday evening following a meeting of Resident Electoral Commissioners at the Commission’s headquarters.

The cause of his death remains undisclosed.

According to an anonymous source, the former REC had returned to his hotel room after the meeting before the incident occurred.

It was revealed that the Ondo-born administrator, who appeared lively throughout the meeting, had retired to a hotel in the Federal Capital Territory before his passing.

The meeting, as described by INEC Chairman Prof Mahmood Yakubu on the Commission’s official Facebook page, focused on two upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States, as well as seven vacant positions in the National and State Assemblies.

Barrister Ijalaye, dressed in a blue striped Kaftan with a red cap, was seen in photos shared by the Commission during the meeting.

He was assigned to Ogun State in March 2022 after the previous REC, Olusegun Agbaje, was transferred to Lagos State.
