Ohanaeze Ndigbo backs Tinubu’s second term bid, asks president to release Nnamdi Kanu

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has officially endorsed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term.

The group said it felt the need to uphold the principle of rotational presidency as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s democracy.

In a detailed statement signed by its Deputy President General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze emphasized the importance of equity and fairness, noting that following eight years of Northern leadership under former President Muhammadu Buhari, it is the South’s turn to retain power until 2031.

The group stated: “Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s endorsement of President Tinubu for a second term in 2027 is decisive and reflects our commitment to a trajectory of peace, stability, and infrastructural development for the Southeast.

“We call upon our members and all Igbo people to align with this vision, setting aside parochial interests in favour of a united front that champions genuine progress for our region.”

Ohanaeze Ndigbo urged President Tinubu to address critical issues affecting the Southeast, including the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The group argued that Kanu’s release would not only symbolize an act of mercy but also catalyze peace and stability in the region, which has been plagued by insecurity.

In addition to this demand, Ohanaeze outlined a roadmap for Southeast development, calling for accelerated completion of federal road projects, representation in the upcoming 2025 census, and the creation of new states—Anioma and Aba.

The group also advocated for economic revitalization through initiatives like reopening the Calabar Seaport, reviving the Enugu coal mine and modernizing rail connectivity.

“We also highlight the urgency of revitalizing the Eastern Economic corridors, which require strategic reinvestment.

“Initiatives such as the dredging and reopening of Calabar Seaport, the revival of Enugu Coal Mine, and the establishment of the Akwete Blue River Deep Seaport in Ukwa East, Abia State are paramount.

“Furthermore, upgrading the railway framework from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri and enhancing connectivity within our towns, including Onitsha, Owerri, Okigwe, Abakaliki, and Awka, will solidify our region’s economic potential,” the group stated.

The organization stressed that its endorsement of Tinubu is contingent on tangible progress in these areas, urging all Igbo people to unite behind a common agenda for regional development and national harmony.

“We seek harmony, resilience, and a brighter future for the Igbo people, anchored on infrastructural enhancement and unwavering commitment to security and well-being,” the statement concluded.
