The Olakulehin Royal Family has released details of the funeral rites and farewell activities for the late 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away on Monday, July 7, 2025, at the age of 90 after a brief illness in Ibadan, Oyo State.

According to a statement by Olasunmbo Olakulehin, first son of the late monarch, Governor Seyi Makinde has approved a state burial scheduled for Friday, August 8, 2025. The burial service and interment will take place at the Cathedral of Saint Peter, Aremo, Ibadan, starting at 10:00 a.m.

The family disclosed that a series of events, initially planned to celebrate Oba Olakulehin’s 90th birthday and first coronation anniversary, have been rescheduled as part of the official 21-day mourning period.

The activities will begin on Sunday, August 3, 2025, with the Olubadan Olakulehin Football Cup semi-final matches at Bishop Philips Academy Stadium, Ibadan, at 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.

On Monday, August 4, the preliminaries of the Olakulehin Table Tennis Tournament will take place at the Indoor Hall of Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan, at 10:00 a.m.

The third-place football match of the tournament will take place on Tuesday, August 5, at the Olubadan Stadium at 2:00 p.m., while the final will kick off at 4:00 p.m.

The finals of the Table Tennis Tournament will follow on Wednesday, August 6, marking the conclusion of the rescheduled sporting events.

Before the final burial, the late monarch’s body will lie in state during an interfaith service at Mapo Hall on Thursday, August 7, at 10 am. A Christian wake service will also be held on the same day at the Olubadan Palace, Oke Aremo, Ibadan, at 3:00 p.m.

The funeral rites will be concluded with a family Thanksgiving service on Sunday, August 10, at the Cathedral of Saint Peter’s, Aremo, Ibadan, at 10:00 a.m.

The Olakulehin family extended gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, Governor Seyi Makinde, members of the Olubadan-in-Council, traditional and religious leaders, politicians, business leaders, corporate organisations, Ibadan groups and associations, ethnic communities, residents of Ibadan, professional bodies, and Nigerians for their condolences, visits, and support during the mourning period.
