IN a demonstration of compassion and justice, the Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa has generously granted clemency to 117 inmates currently serving sentences in the state.

This initiative is based on recommendations from the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, reflecting a dedication to rehabilitation and second chances within the justice system.

Among those benefiting from this decision, 19 inmates will be fully released, while others will have their death sentences reduced to life imprisonment.

Furthermore, several inmates will have their sentences shortened, offering them renewed hope and opportunities for reintegration into society.

This decision was officially communicated in a statement signed by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Olukayode Ajulo, who also chairs the Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

The governor signed the release orders on September 27, 2024, with the changes set to take effect on October 1, 2024, coinciding with the nation’s 64th Independence celebrations.

Dr. Ajulo noted, “Governor Aiyedatiwa’s actions are in line with Section 212 (1) (2) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

“The Advisory Council carefully reviewed each application, ensuring that its recommendations followed established guidelines and considered various factors.

“The Council’s discussions were guided by input from correctional authorities, legal experts, and respected community members, focusing on aspects such as the nature of the offenses, length of incarceration, age, health, and behavior of the inmates.

“This compassionate act highlights Governor Aiyedatiwa’s steadfast commitment to alleviating overcrowding in Ondo State’s correctional facilities and is a crucial part of ongoing Justice Sector Reforms.

“The approval of these releases not only signifies a move towards mercy but also reaffirms the belief in the possibility of change and redemption in every individual.”
