ONDO: Police tighten security, deploy officers across 18 LGAs ahead of guber polls

In a statement yesterday, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, announced that comprehensive security measures had been implemented, with officers deployed across the state’s 18 local government areas, 203 wards, and 3,933 polling units. Each polling unit will have at least four police officers, supported by other security personnel, to guarantee a smooth electoral process.

During a press briefing at the Ondo State Police Command Headquarters in Akure, DIG Sylvester Alabi, who oversees the election, addressed officers and media representatives, reiterating the NPF’s commitment to ensuring peace and security. He highlighted the importance of intelligence gathering and firm measures to counter threats and electoral interference.

Seventeen political parties are participating in the election. The DIG emphasized that strategic personnel deployment is based on a thorough threat analysis, particularly in vulnerable areas. He urged citizens to adhere to the Electoral Act 2023, INEC guidelines, and other laws, warning that electoral offenders would be prosecuted.

INEC Prepares for Elections
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has distributed sensitive materials, including ballot papers, to all 18 local government areas. The distribution took place at the Central Bank of Nigeria in Akure under the supervision of State Resident Electoral Commissioner Oluwatoyin Babalola. Representatives of political parties, security agencies, and stakeholders witnessed the process. Babalola assured transparency and highlighted special preparations for riverine and remote areas.

FRSC Mobilizes Personnel
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has deployed 1,500 operatives to ensure smooth election-day operations.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, directed the personnel to collaborate with other security agencies to enforce vehicular movement restrictions, clear road obstructions, and manage emergencies. The FRSC has also mobilized 25 patrol vehicles, seven tow trucks, and six ambulances to support enforcement.

Mohammed urged the personnel to uphold professionalism and respect voters’ rights while maintaining order at polling stations.

State Declares Work-Free Day
To facilitate the election process, the Ondo State government declared today a work-free day, resulting in the closure of government offices and schools. Activities across the state have reportedly slowed as preparations continue for the polls.
