One dead, nine rescued as two-storey building collapses in Lagos

A two-storey building under construction has collapsed at Otta-Ona Junction in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State, leaving one dead and nine people rescued.

Eyewitnesses reported that the collapse occurred around 2:00 p.m.

Emergency responders from the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), including its Response Team and Pre-Hospital Care Unit, were swiftly deployed to the site to initiate rescue efforts.

Confirming the incident, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, said “Following a distress alert received at 2:02 p.m., LASEMA activated the State’s Emergency Response Plan with teams dispatched from Agbowa and Alausa.”

“Upon arrival at 2:40 p.m., it was discovered that a two-storey building under construction had collapsed, trapping three individuals beneath the debris. The cause of the collapse is yet to be determined.”

Dr. Oke-Osanyintolu further reported that nine adult males were successfully rescued and treated on-site by the Pre-Hospital Care Unit. Sadly, one body was recovered from the rubble as of the time of reporting.

“LASEMA’s Tiger and Lion Response Teams immediately began search and rescue operations, and the area was cordoned off for safety. Heavy-duty machinery, including an excavator, was brought in to assist the operation.

“Several other agencies joined the ongoing efforts, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Nigeria Police, and the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA),” he said.
