One Killed, Another Injured As Yahoo Boys Opens Fire On EFCC Operatives In Anambra

According to sources, the suspected fraudsters opened fire on the operatives, killing one officer instantly and leaving another in critical condition.

Speaking to The Gazette, an EFCC spokesperson confirmed awareness of the incident but refrained from providing detailed comments pending further investigation. Efforts to reach the Anambra State police spokesperson for additional information were unsuccessful as of Friday night.

The attack comes at a time when EFCC chairman Ola Olukoyede is implementing new strategies to combat financial crimes. Historically, cybercriminals were considered non-violent and rarely resisted arrest. However, the increasing aggression displayed by these groups has raised concerns among anti-graft operatives.

The officer who lost his life in the attack, identified as an assistant superintendent, had recently completed a promotional examination, adding to the heartbreak of his colleagues and family.

“We no longer have life insurance,” an anonymous EFCC officer disclosed. “The families of the officer who died today won’t be getting anything. Can we really say he died for a cause when there’s no support for his loved ones?”

Another operative expressed frustration over the perceived neglect of officers’ welfare, emphasizing the risks they face daily without any form of compensation or support for their families in the event of fatal incidents.
