A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday at the Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State, where at least one person was confirmed dead and six others injured after operatives of the Ocha Brigade — the state’s environmental enforcement task force — allegedly opened fire during a clash with traders.
The altercation between the task force officials and market traders reportedly escalated into violence, culminating in the use of live ammunition. The shooting sparked chaos across the bustling market, forcing many traders and customers to flee for safety.
In a statement released shortly after the incident, Anambra State Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the shooting and said law enforcement had swiftly deployed tactical teams to restore order.
“The operatives swiftly addressed and calmed the traders, restoring order and dispersing them back to their shops and lawful businesses,” the statement read.
Ikenga also confirmed that seven people sustained gunshot wounds during the incident. He identified some of the victims as Ebuka Orakwe, Orum Oluebube, Anthony Kosisochukwu, Ifeoma Ezema, and Chinwe Igwe (F, 22), while two others remain unidentified.
Tragically, “Igwe was later confirmed dead,” Ikenga said, adding that her body has been deposited at the hospital morgue for autopsy. “The other victims are currently receiving treatment and are responding positively,” he added.
The police said the management of the task force has been summoned to help identify the operatives involved in the shooting, with a view to ensuring their prosecution.
Later Tuesday night, Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, issued a statement on behalf of the state government, announcing that Governor Chukwuma Soludo had ordered the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the shooting.
“An investigation into the incident has commenced, and the government will ensure that all necessary measures are taken to prevent similar occurrences,” Mefor said.
