A Special Assistant on Digital Media Strategy to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Demola Olarewaju, has said that a possible alliance between Atiku and the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, could produce the strongest opposition ticket against President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

Olarewaju, who made the remark while speaking on the “Mic On Podcast,” said the combination of both opposition leaders would give Nigerians a new sense of governance that balances experience, competence, and vision.

According to Olarewaju, a joint Atiku-Obi ticket could be designed as a co-presidency, a partnership that would allow Nigerians to benefit from both men’s leadership strengths and reform ideas.

“I think the best bet would be to have the two of them on that ticket and give Nigerians this sort of sense of co-presidency,” he said.

He added that both politicians share similar ideologies and complementary leadership qualities that would strengthen the opposition’s appeal nationwide.

The media aide also praised Atiku’s political character, describing him as a loyal democrat who supports party unity even after electoral defeats.

“He lost the primaries to Goodluck Jonathan in 2011 and worked for him, delivering Adamawa State in that election. That’s who Atiku Abubakar is,” Olarewaju said.

He added that Atiku’s consistency and wide political network make him the most viable candidate to lead a united opposition front.

Olarewaju also spoke about the importance of youth inclusion in Nigeria’s political system, stressing that parties must provide meaningful platforms for younger generations to participate in governance.

He cited the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as an example of a party reserving 35 to 50 per cent of its leadership positions for young people and women.

“Nigerians deserve a party that recognizes the strength of young people, Gen Z, even Gen Alpha, and harnesses their potential,” he said.

Commenting on calls for generational transition, Olarewaju revealed that Atiku has expressed willingness to step down for a younger politician if he is defeated in the party primaries.

“Atiku has made it clear that he’s ready to support any younger candidate who can win the primary. But for now, he remains the strongest opposition figure with the experience and network to challenge Tinubu,” he stated.

Olarewaju concluded that an alliance between Atiku and Obi would be a formidable political force, bringing together the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) structure and the Labour Party’s grassroots enthusiasm.

“The strongest ticket that the opposition can present is the marriage of Atiku and Obi,” he said.

“Their political philosophies are similar, and their partnership would not just be strategic, it would be powerful enough to reshape Nigeria’s political balance in 2027.”
