Tijani, the son of the late legendary singer Onyeka Onwenu, paid tribute to his mother on the first anniversary of her passing.
In a heartfelt message shared on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, he wrote, “A year ago today. RIP Mom, July 30, 2024.”
Onyeka Onwenu, often referred to as the “Elegant Stallion,” had just concluded a stellar performance at the birthday celebration of Mrs. Stella Okoli when she was rushed to Reddington Hospital in Lagos, where she sadly passed away.
In a statement released at that time, her children revealed, “She was rushed to the hospital after an amazing last performance, where doctors made every effort to save her life… sadly, she passed.” They described her as an “icon and legend” whose music, films, and humanitarian work touched multiple generations. “She is greatly loved and missed,” they said.
Onwenu is remembered for her timeless albums, such as “In The Morning Light” and “Dancing In The Sun,” as well as her memorable roles in films like “Half of a Yellow Sun” and “Lionheart.”
