OPPO Find X8 Pro Review: Epic Battery, Epic Zoom!

New processors means new phones. And one of the first with MediaTek’s latest and greatest is the OPPO Find X8 and X8 Pro. We’ll be reviewing them separately, though there are a lot of similarities between the two. The Find X8 Pro is a fantastic looking smartphone, with two telephoto cameras, a quad-curved display, and a textured back.

This year, OPPO is continuing to use Silicon-Carbon batteries, and has been able to put a massive 5,910mAh capacity battery in a phone that is only 8.24mm thick, and weighs just 215g. Which provides pretty incredibly battery life on the Find X8 Pro, but we’ll talk more about that later.

Is the Find X8 Pro a proper upgrade from the Find X7 series? Let’s find out in our full review.

OPPO Find X8 Pro Review: Hardware and Design

OPPO has always, as far back as I can remember, had really solid hardware. And that is still the case with the Find X8 Pro. The model we have here for review is the Pearl White model, which does have a textured back. It’s not quite as textured as the sandstone that OnePlus uses but it is textured enough that it’s not slippery, which is incredibly important. It looks really good in this pearl white color and with the shrunken camera module.

As mentioned, the camera bump is smaller this year. OPPO says that due to its innovative design, it’s been able to reduce its size by about 40% when compared to its predecessor. That makes it just 3.58mm thick without compromising the camera quality. Ordinarily, I’d say that you can’t really tell the difference here, but you can. It’s not flush, which is the ultimate goal, but it is much thinner now, making it easier to hold. Some other phones with these huge camera bumps are top-heavy, making it harder to hold onto.

The frame, is aluminum, and thankfully it’s not shiny. So it doesn’t hold onto fingerprints and does fit the textured back quite nicely. OPPO has kept the Alert Slider, a feature that the sister brand, OnePlus, has made very popular. And on the right side are the power button and volume rocker, which has been a little difficult to get used to after using the Pixel 9 for so long since Google likes to flip these two buttons, while every other phone does it the other way.

OPPO has kept the IR Blaster, too, on the Find X8 Pro, which is kinda surprising, but it does tend to be something that Chinese OEMs keep around. So, if you’ve been wanting an IR Blaster on a phone, this is a good one to grab. OPPO has also upped its durability on the Find X8 Pro, making it IP69-rated. Basically, IP69 means that it can withstand jet sprays of water at up to 80 degrees Celsius. Not that you’d ever really want to use a power washer on your phone.

Overall, the hardware is really top-notch here; the design also looks beautiful. While many phones use the circular camera module, the Find X8 Pro has managed to find a way to make the design look unique.

OPPO Find X8 Pro Review: Display

Simply put, this display is stunning. OPPO has outfitted the Find X8 Pro with a 6.78-inch quad-curved display, with bezels that are just 1.9mm thick. It also has peak brightness of 4500 nits, and for those that have sensitive eyes, there’s 2160Hz PWM dimming.

Typically, I dislike curved displays however these quad-curved displays look amazing, and don’t feel slippery like a curved display on the OnePlus 12 does. With these pretty small bezels, the content really does pop out at you, especially with the incredible color reproduction on this display.

OPPO calls this the Infinite View Display since it is slightly curved on all four sides. The advantage to this is, making it stunning, while not needing to worry about accidental touches. That’s something that Samsung phones really struggled with for years, before Samsung decided to ditch curved displays. I’ve been using a quad-curved display on the Xiaomi 14 Ultra most of the year, and I absolutely love it. The story is much the same as that of the OPPO Find X8 Pro.

In terms of brightness, this screen gets incredibly bright. Now in our testing, we were able to get it up to about 1500 nits. Keep in mind that the 4,500 nits of peak brightness is really only going to happen in a testing lab, under the most perfect conditions. OPPO claims that the high brightness mode can bring it up to 1,600 nits, which is pretty close to what we achieved. While the typical brightness is about 800 nits.

This display is also stunning for watching movies and videos on. That’s thanks to its certification in a slew of HDR standards, including Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+, and HLG.

OPPO Find X8 Pro Review: Performance

The OPPO Find X8 Pro is the first phone I’ve gotten to use with the MediaTek Dimensity 9400 inside, which was announced just last month. It’s the latest and greatest silicon from MediaTek which is supposed to be a pretty nice upgrade over the 9300. We’re talking 35% faster CPU, 41% faster GPU along with the CPU being about 40% more efficient, the GPU being 44% more efficient, and AI being about 35% more efficient. So, there were high hopes for this chipset, and I’m glad to report that it did not disappoint.

We’ll get to the benchmarks in a minute, but in general daily tasks, the OPPO Find X8 Pro performed beautifully. The phone really never got hot or even warm. Even in some of our thermal tests, the temperatures were pretty good. The gameplay was really good on the Find X8 Pro, and the quad-curved display looked amazing. I’ve played a number of games on this phone, including Genshin Impact, Wild Rift, and Apex Legends, all of which performed without a hiccup and without the phone getting incredibly hot like some others.

The fingerprint sensor is, unfortunately, not an ultrasonic one. It’s still fast but not quite as accurate as an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor would be. Facial recognition is included, which works really well. Usually after I press the power button, it has already read my face and is unlocking the phone.

Benchmarks

Now, onto the aforementioned benchmarks. We run three performance benchmarks on every phone that we review. That includes Geekbench 6, 3D Mark Wildlife Extreme Stress Test and also a video export test with Capcut. Let’s start off with Geekbench 6.

As most of you likely know, Geekbench 6 tests the raw performance of the CPU in both single-core and multi-core, as well as the GPU. In the graph above, we are comparing it to the OPPO Find X7 Ultra from last year, with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and the Realme GT 7 Pro, which has the new Snapdragon 8 Elite. The OPPO Find X8 Pro falls right between them. However, on the GPU test, the Dimensity 9400 does perform really well, beating just about everything that Apple does not make.

Moving onto the 3D Mark Wildlife Extreme Stress Test, this measures the performance of the phone, and how well it is able to sustain that performance. This is also the furthest your phone will likely ever be tested, both performance and on thermals. The OPPO Find X8 Pro did beat both the Find X7 Ultra and realme GT 7 Pro, however its stability score was below 50%, which is pretty rare in these tests. That means that the phone does get pretty warm, and does get throttled pretty quickly. So while it’s best loop is higher, it’s lowest loop is just barely above last year’s Find X7 Ultra with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.

Finally, we do a video export test with Capcut on every phone we review. Why do we do this? Well, many content creators are editing their TikToks, Shorts, and Reels on their phones, so export times matter. And this is a test that OEMs are less likely to cheat on. What we do here is, we import the same 60-second clip, and then export it at 4K60, timing how long the export takes. The Find X8 Pro did have a pretty nice improvement over the X7 Ultra from last year – about a 30% improvement actually – with a time of 7.01 seconds. However, the new Snapdragon 8 Elite in the realm of GT 7 Pro outperformed it by just 6.34 seconds. All three phones have done very well with this test, actually, and as long as it’s under 10 seconds, I count that as a win since it is nearly instant.

Performance-wise, the OPPO Find X8 Pro did perform just as we expected it too. The Dimensity 9400 should be a bit slower than the new Snapdragon 8 Elite, which is what we’re seeing in these benchmarks. But that really shouldn’t matter in day-to-day usage.

Thermals

An important aspect of any phone these days is also the thermals. So, we have a few different tests we run to see how good (or bad) the thermals are on every phone. One is a benchmark, while the others are tasks that you might do daily. First, after we run the 3D Mark Extreme Wildlife Stress Test for benchmarking, we also measure its temperature. Which the Find X8 Pro came in at 109.9 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s a pretty good temperature, actually (about four degrees lower than the Find X8). Most phones end this test around 110 degrees.

Next up is Genshin Impact. We play this game for an hour at max graphics settings and at full brightness, then measure the temperature of the phone. Since Genshin Impact is so well optimized for mobile now, this usually turns out to be one of the lower thermal readings. However, on the OPPO Find X8 Pro, this test was 95.6 degrees Fahrenheit. That’s not quite the lowest, but it is pretty close. The lowest still goes to the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, surprisingly.

Finally, we have a two-stage camera test. We record video at 4K60 for 10 minutes, however, we take the temperature at 5 minutes and again at 10 minutes to see how hot it gets. The Find X8 Pro also performed exceptionally well here, with temps of 92.8 and 95.7 degrees Fahrenheit. It got noticeably warm but not hot. In our testing, if it can record 10 minutes of 4K60 video and stay under 100 degrees, it has a pretty good thermal system.

OPPO Find X8 Pro Review: Battery Life and Charging

This is probably the bit you’ve been waiting for, considering the size of this battery – 5,910mAh. And the battery did not disappoint. I’ve been using this phone for over a week, and have yet to kill the battery in a single day. The only way to really do that is running a bunch of benchmarks and playing games at full brightness for extended amounts of time.

Instead of charging every night, as I typically do, with the Find X8 Pro, I’ve kept using the phone until the battery gets low. So there was one cycle where it was off the charger for a full two days (48 hours) and had over 12 hours of screen-on time, before it died. that was with mixed usage of WiFi and 5G too. Which is really impressive. I’ve had phones hit 12 hours of screen on time before, but never was that over two full days. That was typically a day and a half or less. So this is quite impressive.

Just as impressive is the charging. OPPO does still include a charger in the box, which is a 80W charger. And it is being marketed as being able to charge from dead to 100% in 43 minutes. We didn’t quite get that in our testing, but it was closer to about 56 minutes. That’s still not too shabby for a phone battery of this size. There’s lots of variables in there, as to why it took longer to charge. Like the power from the outlet, if the phone was being used, etc. Still, this is a good time.

Battery Life Benchmark

We do also run a battery life benchmark on every phone that we review. Essentially, what we do in this test is play a 24-hour-long video on YouTube at full brightness from 100% until about 1%. And time how long it took.

We have good news on this test. The OPPO Find X8 Pro joins the small club of phones that made it past the 24-hour mark. Only five phones have made it that far since we started this benchmark. And we’ve tested over 50 phones in that time span. So that is rather impressive. The OPPO Find X8 Pro had a time of 25 hours and 30 minutes. That’s good enough for fourth best, and about two hours longer than the Find X8 in the same test. Find X8 Pro was just five minutes behind the Galaxy S24 Ultra, but about an hour behind the HONOR Magic6 Pro and Magic6 RSR, both of which had legendary battery life.

Below is a table of the five longest lasting smartphones, from our testing. This is pretty elite company. Also, it’s telling that only one of these phones has a 5,000mAh battery (and available in the US). The rest of these are far above that battery capacity. With the Magic6 Pro and RSR being the smallest at 5,600mAh.

OPPO Find X8 Pro Review: Software

OPPO shipped the Find X8 Pro on ColorOS 15, which is their latest and greatest version of ColorOS based on Android 15. There were a couple of updates available out of the box, which I installed before using the phone at all. Just in case there were some bugs that needed to be fixed, and that wouldn’t cloud my judgement here.

One of the big changes that OnePlus and OPPO talked about with OxygenOS 15 and ColorOS 15, was the smaller system file being used. So it’s less than 10GB now, whereas other phones are closer to 15GB. Not that it was a problem on this phone, since it has 512GB of storage available. But still nice to have a bit more storage available.

With ColorOS 15, OPPO has made a few pretty small changes that users will notice. For one, users can now choose how they want their Quick Settings to be displayed. Whether they want Quick Settings on its own page, or to have it split with the notifications on the same page. This is a feature we’ve seen coming out with a lot of the Chinese smartphones recently, even ASUS with the Zenfone 11 Ultra earlier this year.

ColorOS 15 also brings a slew of new animations – OPPO says there’s over 800 of them. It also brings Circle To Search and Touch to Share. Circle to Seach is one of my favorite features that Google debuted on the Galaxy S24 earlier this year. Essentially, it allows you to circle something on your screen and search for it right there, without leaving that app. Which is incredibly useful.

Perhaps the biggest feature in ColorOS 15 is Touch to Share. This allows you to quick share pictures or videos with other Android users, and other iPhone users. Now, it’s a bit more of a hassle with the iPhone, as the iPhone user needs to download an app for this to work, but it does work, and it works pretty well. I’ve tried it, moving photos from the OPPO Find X8 Pro to my iPhone 16 Pro and it worked flawlessly.

Finally, ColorOS 15 does bring a visual overhaul, which makes it look more like its own operating system and less of an iOS clone. This includes redesigned icons and widgets that offer a fresh look on your home screen and app drawer.

The software on OPPO Find X8 Pro is incredibly smooth, and it just works. There are really no complaints here about the software. It does what’s advertised and doesn’t slow down, no matter how many apps you have open. Of course, 16GB of RAM is available here.

OPPO Find X8 Pro Review: Camera

OPPO had some pretty big shoes to fill, after how good the Find X7 Ultra’s camera system was this past year. Despite the Find X8 Pro not being an “Ultra” smartphone, it does still have an “Ultra” camera setup. In fact, a few of the sensors have changed this year. For example, the primary sensor is a 50-megapixel sensor with a larger aperture of f/1.6, while the Find X7 Ultra had a 1-inch type sensor for the primary lens. So the X7 Ultra is likely still better – though I don’t have it here to compare. I have been comparing it to the Xiaomi 14 Ultra which does have a 1-inch type sensor, however.

Additionally, the OPPO Find X8 Pro also sports a 50-megapixel ultrawide sensor with an f/2.0 aperture, a 3x telephoto sensor that’s 50-megapixels and has an f/2.6 aperture, and finally, a 6x telephoto sensor that is also 50-megapixel, but with a smaller f/4.3 aperture. Thanks to the OPPO Find X8 Pro having dual telephoto sensors at 3x and 6x, it means that this smartphone has gapless quality zoom. OPPO pairs the dual sensors with its in-sensor zoom technology, to cover an incredible focal range. Which is even more impressive when you remember the fact that this camera bump is about 40% thinner this year. Of course, OPPO is also using AI for its zooming capabilities, like a lot of other cameras these days. Though that’s really only used for digital zoom that’s over 6x.

So now how well does the camera perform? Quite well actually. As I mentioned, I’ve been comparing this to the Xiaomi 14 Ultra – which in my mind, is still the best camera phone. Below are a few side-by-side comparisons between the OPPO Find X8 Pro and the Xiaomi 14 Ultra. The main difference I noticed here, at every focal length is, Xiaomi offers better natural bokeh as expected, since it does have a much larger sensor. And it tends to offer better and more natural colors compared to the Find X8 Pro. Honestly, they are pretty minor differences, and if I didn’t have them side-by-side, I probably wouldn’t have noticed it.

The zoom capabilities are pretty incredible here too. It can go all the way up to 120x zoom, but I’d never use that. It’s there though. I typically use 3x and 6x, sometimes a bit further at 13.3x which is one of the presets here. Anything after that gets very watercolor-like.

OPPO also has a few exclusive modes that are included in the Find X8 Pro. On both the Photo and Video option, you’ll see a down-arrow now, for additional modes. This shows you Stage, Silhouette and Fireworks. Thanks to the Zero Shutter Lag on Find X8 Pro, you can take amazing photos in these scenes, which wouldn’t have been possible before. Now, it’s November, so fireworks aren’t really happening. I haven’t been to any concerts, so it’s been hard to test out this feature. But from the shots I’ve seen from OPPO, it looks very promising.

And finally, rounding out the camera section, we do also need to talk about the Quick Button. This is a “button” on the side of the Find X8 Pro that works like the Camera Control button on the iPhone 16 series. Except this isn’t actually a button and Camera Control is a button. Interesting. But basically, this is like 3D Touch, where you can double tap the button to quickly open the camera. Once in the camera, you can use it to snap a photo or press and hold for Lightning Snap (OPPO’s name for burst photos), and finally, you can use it for zooming.

I have to say, Quick Button does work surprisingly well. It’s far better than Camera Control on iPhone 16. However, my complaint here is that I often trigger it by holding the phone. This is likely why OPPO decided to make the camera shortcut a double tap versus a single tap to prevent that from happening. But it is a bit weird to feel the vibration when scrolling through Instagram. OPPO does say that an upcoming OTA update will add more to this feature, including instant capture with a double tap. So you can capture the perfect moment even faster.

Should you buy the OPPO Find X8 Pro?

The OPPO Find X8 Pro is quickly becoming one of my favorite phones in quite some time. OPPO has done so much correct with this phone. Nailing the battery life, charging speeds, cameras, and even the software. Something that we couldn’t say just a few years ago. If I didn’t live in America, I’d likely be rocking this over my Pixel 9 Pro. But should you buy the Find X8 Pro? Well that depends. If you have the Find X7 series (any of them), it’s probably not worth it. But if you want a stellar battery, a great camera, and a stunning display, then you’ll want to get the Find X8 Pro.

You should buy the OPPO Find X8 Pro if: 

• You want incredible battery life.
• You want cameras with gapless zoom.
• You want one of the most stunning displays on the market.

You should not buy the OPPO Find X8 Pro if:

• You live in the US, unfortunately the Find X8 Pro does not work 100% with US carriers.
• You have the Find X7 Ultra, it’s not much of an upgrade until a X8 Ultra launches.
