Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Transformers #27
Image Comics’ Energon Universe is finally giving Optimus Prime the makeover he’s desperately been needing. Having first begun in 2023, the war between the Autobots and Decepticons in Transformers has only been ramping up, especially with Megatron’s recent return. Now, the time has come for Optimus to better look the part as the Autobots’ fearless leader.
Robert Kirkman has recently taken the writing reins on Transformers, and the stakes are only getting higher in this new era as Decepticons like Thundercracker have defected and joined the Autobots. However, the new Transformers #27 reveals a brief period of respite before the brutal battles that are sure to come, allowing Optimus to get a much-needed upgrade.
The Energon Universe’s Optimus Prime Has Been Avoiding His Own Repairs Since 2023
In Transformers #27, the Autobots finally have a chance to start making repairs and revive a few of their fallen comrades with the new resources and energon they were given in their new partnership with the US government. This includes the revival of key Autobot allies like Mirage and Bulkhead.
However, Optimus Prime has long refused to receive repairs himself, wanting to make sure all of his soldiers receive everything they need.
Way back in 2023’s Transformers #3, Optimus Prime lost his entire arm during a fight with none other than Thundercracker. The surprising solution at the time was Prime using Megatron’s arm cannon as a replacement, at least until the leader of the Decepticons’ recent return, where he brutally took his arm back.
Since that time, Optimus’ arm has been a makeshift jumble of exposed wires and parts, Wheeljack’s best efforts under the circumstances. While Optimus was even considering reviving fallen Decepticons before accepting repairs, Wheeljack and the newly-defected Thundercracker finally get him to change his mind in the new Transformers #27.
Finally, Optimus Prime Has Been Restored (Just In Time)
On one of the last pages of Transformers #27, we finally get to see Optimus Prime restored and back in peak condition, and even his fellow Autobots are impressed. Calling upon his comrades for a renewed mission to rid the Earth of all Decepticons, Optimus’ restoration is a very exciting moment in the Energon Universe, especially now that it feels like the Autobots have an advantage in this war.
As a result, it’s going to be very exciting to see where the Autobots and Decepticons’ battle takes them next as Robert Kirkman and Dan Mora’s Transformers run continues.
Transformers #27 is on sale now from Image Comics.
