Nigerian forward, Victor Osimhen, and Gabonese striker, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, have shared their insights regarding who might win the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award at the upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In an impressive turn of events, Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong surprised many by winning the MVP award at the 2023 AFCON held in Côte d’Ivoire.

The Nigerian centre-back showcased centre-back prowess and contributed significantly by scoring three goals, helping guide the Super Eagles to their first AFCON final in a decade. His achievement marked the first time a defender had received the best player title since Cameroon’s Rigobert Song did in 2002.

As anticipation builds for the 2025 edition, which will take place in Morocco, 24 nations have already secured their places in the 35th AFCON. The competition promises to showcase Africa’s finest football talents, all vying for both the trophy and individual accolades.

When asked who they believe will take home the MVP honours at AFCON 2025, both Osimhen and Aubameyang expressed confidence in their abilities. Galatasaray striker and the 2023 African Footballer of the Year winner, Osimhen, stated with conviction, “Myself,” when asked who he predicts will be the Player of the Tournament.

Aubameyang, the former Arsenal star and Gabon’s all-time leading scorer, confidently remarked, “If I’m there, I will be the player of the tournament. Write it down.”

Note that by the time the tournament commences in December, Aubameyang will be 36 years old.

Osimhen, who holds the record as the highest-scoring African player in Serie A, will be making his third appearance at AFCON in 2025. He previously earned a bronze medal in 2019 and a silver medal in 2023, making his participation in 2025 a highly anticipated event.
