WATCH THE VIDEO HERE FORMER Osun State Commissioner for Works and Transportation and APC member, Remi Omowaiye, has criticized an Ilesa High Court order mandating elections for chairmanship and councillorship positions across the state’s 30 local government areas. Omowaiye argued that a Court of Appeal ruling had already affirmed the legitimacy of local government officials elected under the previous APC administration, rendering a fresh election unnecessary. “It’s unfortunate that such an order is coming from a court in my town. This is judicial rascality,” Omowaiye stated. “There is a clear court judgment affirming the elected local government officials. There is no vacancy. It is laughable that a lower court would issue an interlocutory injunction against the judgment of a higher court.” Yesterday, the court directed the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) to proceed with elections to fill the vacant local government positions. Prior to this ruling, Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi had advised against the election, citing a court verdict that reinstated previously sacked local government officials. Osun State has been mired in conflict over the election plans, leading to violence and loss of lives. Recall that the police confirmed the deaths of six individuals on Monday, following a crisis triggered by a controversial Court of Appeal ruling allegedly reinstating APC-elected local government chairmen and councillors.
