The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing another internal storm as over 20 of its federal lawmakers have threatened to dump the party.
Their grievance stems from an alleged plan by the party’s leadership to approve a nominee reportedly backed by an All Progressives Congress (APC) governor for the position of PDP National Woman Leader.
The lawmakers, in a statement issued through their spokesperson, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, accused the party of handing a nomination form to a candidate said to be supported by Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah.
They described the move as a betrayal of loyal PDP members and an attempt to hand over key party positions to individuals loyal to the APC.
According to the lawmakers, the alleged arrangement is being driven by certain elements within the PDP who are “working to surrender the party’s key positions to individuals aligned with the APC.”
Unless the party leadership withdraws the nominee before the screening exercise scheduled for Tuesday, the lawmakers warned that they would have no choice but to leave the party before its national convention.
They further expressed disappointment that loyal party members from the South East are being sidelined despite their consistent support for the PDP.
Lawmakers involved stressed that the National Woman Leader position had traditionally been reserved for the South East and should not be manipulated for political convenience.
The aggrieved lawmakers urged the National Working Committee (NWC) to act swiftly and ensure that only committed party members are cleared for the position.
However, they called on the leadership to promote fairness, transparency, and internal democracy as the party rebuilds ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Meanwhile, the screening of candidates for national offices is expected to take place on Tuesday as preparations continue for the party’s national convention.
