Human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, has claimed that over 50 police officers violently attacked his client, Omoyele Sowore, during his rearrest by officers of the Nigeria Police.
Naijaonpoint reports that Sowore, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), who was arrested over a recent protest organised to advocate the release of detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, was rearrested on Friday.
The police immediately arrested the human rights activist after he was granted bail at the Kuje Magistrates’ Court.
Addressing journalists at the court premises shortly after the rearrest, Deji said the police officers vowed to deal with Sowore for calling the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, useless.
He said, “He was violently attacked by more than 50 police officers. They took him away by force and we do not know where they are taking him to.
“The officer, who initiated the arrest, claimed that they had gotten a remand order but he refused to let us see it.
“We asked where they were taking him to, they said they were taking him to Kuje prison.
“An argument ensued and the officer said because Sowore called the IGP useless that they must deal with him and all of them started attacking him. That is the update currently, we are trying to perfect the condition for his bail”.
