Oyo AG Opposes Bail For Queen Naomi, Oriyomi Hamzat, And School Principal Over Ibadan Stampede Tragedy

The State’s legal team, led by Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Abiodun Aikomo, fiercely opposed the bail application filed by the defendants’ counsel.

The accused, Queen Naomi Shilekunola Ogunseyi, former wife of the Ooni of Ife; popular radio broadcaster, Oriyomi Hamzat; and school principal, Abdullai Fasasi, face charges of negligence and endangering public safety in connection with the devastating incident that has left the Oyo State community in shock and mourning.

The defence team argued for bail, asserting that the accused posed no flight risk and were committed to cooperating with the ongoing investigations. However, Barrister Aikomo vehemently opposed the motion, emphasizing the gravity of the charges and the importance of ensuring justice for the victims and their grieving families.

Presiding over the case, Justice Kamarudeen Olawoyin acknowledged the high stakes and intense public interest surrounding the proceedings. After carefully considering the arguments presented by both sides, Justice Olawoyin adjourned the ruling on the bail application until Tuesday, January 13, leaving the fate of the defendants hanging in the balance.

Governor Seyi Makinde had previously addressed the case during the annual interfaith programme marking the resumption of work at the state government secretariat, where he reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the rule of law and maintaining a non-interference stance in the legal proceedings. The governor stressed that justice must prevail in this case, which has sent shockwaves through the Oyo State community.
