A midnight fire destroyed properties worth millions of naira at a farmers’ market, known as “Oja Agbe,” located in Moniya, Akinyele Local Government Area, Oyo State.

The fire, which began around midnight, affected several shops, containers, and kiosks.

Firefighters from the Oyo State Fire Service managed to extinguish the blaze before it spread to nearby residential areas.

In a statement, the agency’s manager, Akinyemi Akinyinka, revealed that a distress call was received at 12:27 a.m. on December 2, reporting that shops at Moniya Garage, Oja Agbe, were ablaze.

He explained that firefighters, led by ACFS Oyedeji, were immediately deployed to the scene.

Upon arrival, they found rows of shops and container stores engulfed in flames.

“We swiftly took action to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading to nearby shops and properties,” Akinyemi stated.

He confirmed that while significant damage occurred, the timely intervention of the fire service minimized further losses. No lives were lost in the incident.

Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was caused by unattended electrical appliances left plugged in.

Akinyemi urged residents to handle electrical devices cautiously, especially during the harmattan season, to prevent similar incidents.
