Tension has escalated in Umuchima village, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State, following the return of unknown gunmen who allegedly killed a local resident accused of tipping off the Nigerian Army about their activities.

Earlier this week, the Nigerian Army, through its Joint Task Force, South East Operation codenamed Operation Udo Ka, dismantled a suspected gunmen’s camp in the village.

However, the gunmen retaliated, targeting an alleged informant.

In response, many residents of the village fled to neighboring communities, taking only essential belongings. Fear of becoming collateral damage compelled them to seek safety until the situation stabilizes.

Speaking to Daily Post, a distraught villager shared, “The fear is real. They just stormed the village in a commando-like style and killed a native who they accused of being an informant.”

Naijaonpoint reports that this attack follows a recent clash between gunmen and personnel of the Nigerian Army’s 14 Brigade, Ohafia, in the same village.

The Army reportedly deployed over 15 Hilux vehicles and armored carriers to storm the area, focusing on suspected camps near a river bordering Abia and the Mbaise region of Imo State.

The Abia State Government, alongside security agencies, has reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating gunmen wreaking havoc in the region.

These criminal groups have been linked to the deaths of several security operatives in recent months.
