Tension heightened on Wednesday at the national secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abuja after police officers sealed off the complex with heavy barbed-wire barricades, preventing the Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) from holding its postponed inaugural meeting.
Operatives of the Rapid Deployment Barrier Unit of the FCT Police Command mounted the barricades at the main entrance, effectively shutting down all activities at the Wadata Plaza headquarters.
Staff, party members and journalists who arrived early were shocked to find the entire facility cordoned off, with armed officers positioned around the perimeter.
A PDP staff member who spoke with Vanguard said, “The tension around the PDP secretariat is really palpable after the police put up the barbed-wire barricade, especially with the Rapid Deployment Barrier Unit of the FCT Command involved.”
The blockade immediately triggered fresh reactions within the party, as many interpreted the police action as a calculated attempt to stop the Turaki-led NWC from settling in and formally assuming office.
“We believe the move was meant to stop the Turaki-led NWC from holding its postponed inaugural meeting,” another party source said.
The development has become the latest flashpoint in the PDP’s leadership tussle, which has intensified sharply in recent days.
Throughout Wednesday, police presence increased dramatically, with patrol vans circulating around Wuse Zone 5 in what appeared to be a deliberate show of force.
“Police have been patrolling Wuse Zone 5, Abuja, around the PDP national secretariat, clearly putting on a show of force,” a source told Vanguard.
