As part of ongoing efforts to resolve the crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Tanimu Turaki-led National Working Committee (NWC) has met with state chairmen of the party.
Naijaonpoint reports that the meeting, held on Wednesday at the Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, is the first engagement between the new NWC and state chairmen since the Ibadan Convention.
The State Chairmen Forum was led by the Edo State PDP chairman, Tony Aziegbemi.
At least 29 attendees introduced themselves as chairmen from their respective states.
The session marks the beginning of a series of strategic meetings planned by the Turaki-led leadership as he moves to consolidate his emergence as PDP National Chairman at the convention.
In his welcome address, Turaki urged the state chairmen to present robust ideas that would reposition the party.
He downplayed the activities of PDP members loyal to the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and Samuel Anyanwu, who on Sunday inaugurated a caretaker committee to manage the party and prepare for a national convention.
Calling for focus and commitment, the PDP chairman told the chairmen to brace for the work ahead, stressing that the party under his leadership “means business.”
Shortly after his opening remarks, the meeting moved into a closed-door session.
Naijaonpoint reports that the PDP is currently split between two factions claiming leadership of the opposition party.
While the Wike-backed group is led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, the Kabiru Turaki faction enjoys the support of Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed.
For now, no court has ruled on the legitimacy of either side.
