The opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ekiti State suffered another setback on Monday, October 20, 2025, after one of its key figures and former House of Assembly candidate, Hon. Niyi Adeogun, led several party leaders and members to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Adeogun said their decision was driven by what he described as the “radical economic reforms” of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the inclusive governance style of Governor Biodun Oyebanji at the state level.
The defection, which took place at Erinmope/Aaye Oja/Irare Ward in Moba Local Government Area, further weakened the PDP’s grassroots structure in the area.
Speaking while being received by APC leaders, Adeogun commended Governor Oyebanji for his “open-door policy” and “commitment to the welfare of all citizens regardless of political affiliation.”
“Governor Oyebanji has shown leadership that accommodates everyone — students, women, artisans, civil servants, and politicians across party lines,” he said.
He praised the governor’s focus on rural development, citing projects such as the Erinmope-Irare Road reconstruction and other infrastructure efforts that have boosted agriculture and food production in the state.
“Everywhere you go, there are signs of progress. Ekiti has become a massive construction site,” he declared.
“I am not defecting for personal gain, but to support the governor’s good work. I will help strengthen the APC at the grassroots and ensure his re-election in 2026.”
He added that he defected alongside the PDP Ward Chairman, Youth Leader, and other party executives, describing them as “the lifeblood of the opposition” in the area.
Receiving the defectors, APC State Chairman, Hon. Sola Elesin, assured them of equal treatment and urged them to work together for the party’s victory in the next election.
Elesin, represented by the Ward Chairman, Hon. Kolawole Olaoluwa, said the Oyebanji administration had created a political atmosphere devoid of discrimination.
“Now that you have joined us, be loyal to our party and the governor, who is a man of integrity,” he said.
“You have every right to aspire to any position of your choice. As the 2026 election approaches, work with others to ensure the governor’s re-election so that we can continue to enjoy the dividends of democracy.”
