PDP Under Fire Over Failure to Punish Wike

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has come under strong criticism over its failure to punish the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and former Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, who openly admitted to working against the party in the 2023 presidential election.

A former Director of the PDP Presidential Campaign Council, Oladimeji Fabiyi, has accused the party’s leadership of irresponsibility and of being too close to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking on Arise News on Monday, Fabiyi said the party has been in crisis since the last elections and has done nothing to hold disloyal members accountable.

“The problem is that we have leadership that is not responsible. They should have been more responsible than what they’re doing now, it’s everywhere in the news,” he said.

“The party has had issues since after the election. The party lost the presidential election and lost some states too. So up till now, there are some people that have committed serious, grievous actions that are meant to be disciplined.

“Have you been able to discipline them? They set up a reconciliation committee. What has been the report? What has been the outcome of the reconciliation committee, what have they done?”

Wike, along with four other governors, had openly opposed the PDP’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and instead supported the APC’s Bola Tinubu, who was later declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

Fabiyi said the fact that Wike has not been punished, even after admitting he worked against the party, shows how weak the current leadership is.

“Everywhere, all over now, everybody, the majority opinion is that why Minister Wike has not been punished for coming out to admit that he worked against the party and still going to do that.

He’s still there today.”

He also criticized the PDP Governors’ Forum, saying it has become a place of compromise rather than strategy.

“The governors’ forum meeting, to me, is just a gathering of compromise rather than gardening of strategy because the expectations of the party faithful were so high.

“They thought these governors would sit down and look at those germane issues, those front burners, and address them, and take hard decisions on them.”

Fabiyi went further to call for the resignation of the current leadership of the party, saying they have lost focus and can no longer lead the PDP to success.

“For me, I’ve totally lost confidence in the current leadership of the party, and I don’t see them getting anything right until they all leave so that we can have a new lease of life in the party.

The current NWC of the party has failed the party. So I don’t have confidence in anything they do.”

On efforts to reconcile members, he questioned the role of former Senate President Bukola Saraki.

“Well, reconciliation is a trend that Saraki has been on but I have my reservation for him, because when the North Central needed him mostly, he deserted them.

“He deserted the North Central. So as far as I’m concerned, it’s all jokes. We have to tell them the truth. We have to tell them. If you don’t tell yourself the truth, you can’t fix the problem.”
