The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Minister, Nyesom Wike-backed faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is set to convene a crucial meeting in Abuja on Sunday to discuss caretaker arrangements and strategise for the party’s national convention.
The meeting, as confirmed by top sources within the faction, aims to address leadership concerns ahead of the December 9 expiration of the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) elected in 2021.
Sources within the Wike faction who spoke with Punch indicated that the meeting will focus on organising the party’s next steps, including setting up a caretaker committee, planning for the national convention, and making decisions to secure the party’s future.
The PDP has been facing internal divisions following a power struggle between factions loyal to Wike and those aligned with Tanimu Turaki, the newly elected NWC chairman.
“We are fully aware that the tenure will end soon.
“We cannot just fold our hands and allow things to slide. All issues will be on the table during the meeting, and we will discuss the setup of the caretaker committee, the convention, NEC, and congresses in the states,” said a prominent member of the Wike faction, speaking on the condition of anonymity.
The member emphasised that the Wike-led faction is committed to ensuring the PDP remains a “formidable party” and is determined to safeguard internal democracy while protecting its structure.
“Our collective responsibility is to safeguard internal democracy, protect our structure, and ensure that fairness, unity, and respect for due process guide every step we take moving forward,” the source added.
The internal strife within the PDP has become more pronounced since the conclusion of the Ibadan national convention, which saw Turaki and other NWC members elected on November 16, 2025.
The convention, held after the shutdown of the party’s Wadata Plaza headquarters, was supported by several PDP governors, including Seyi Makinde (Oyo) and Bala Mohammed (Bauchi).
However, members of the Wike faction, including Mohammed Abdulrahman and Samuel Anyanwu, insist they remain the Acting National Chairman and National Secretary, respectively, arguing that the Ibadan convention was legally flawed.
Despite the Turaki-led NWC being handed the reins by former National Chairman, Umar Damagum, before the December 9 deadline, the Wike faction remains determined to push forward with their own agenda.
A source within the faction confirmed that several leaders loyal to Wike had already arrived in Abuja to attend the meeting.
In response to the Wike faction’s plans, another member of the Turaki-led NWC confirmed their awareness of the caretaker committee proposal. However, the source dismissed the Wike faction’s actions, stating that the illegality will not stand the test of time.
The source said, “We are fully aware of what they are planning. We know that their plan is to set up a caretaker committee, and they are already preparing to meet on Sunday and Monday.
“This illegality will not stand the test of time, so we are not particularly bothered about it, as the rightful process and established party structures will ultimately prevail.”
