Peter Obi backs planned nationwide protest, warns against violence

Obi, a former governor of Anambra State, emphasized that the Nigerian Constitution permits protests as a right of its citizens.

However, he cautioned against violence, indicating that such demonstrations should be conducted legally.

He pointed out that hunger and despair among the youth are driving factors behind the protest and urged Nigerian authorities to listen and respond to the concerns of the protesters.

“Protests are permissible under the Nigerian Constitution,” Obi stated during a visit to Abia State Governor Alex Otti at his residence in Nvosi, Isialangwa South Local Government Area. “My plea to those protesting is to do so lawfully and in a civil manner that reflects our commitment to the rule of law.”

Recognizing the hardships faced by citizens, he said, “It’s crucial that we pay attention to what Nigerians are experiencing, and I appreciate our governor, Alex Otti, for his willingness to do so. It’s important.”

Obi believes there is nothing wrong with people protesting.

He mentioned that protests occur even in his own household, although he did not specify the nature of these protests.

He called on security forces to protect the protesters, advising them to act within the legal framework.

“I urge security agencies to handle the situation lawfully and avoid being overbearing. There is nothing inappropriate about protesting; it is universally accepted. Even in my home, protests happen. We must listen to the grievances of those who protest.”

“Why are they protesting? Engage with them, for that is the essence of governance. Conversations are necessary, and there is nothing wrong with that,” he added.
