Peter Obi visits Onitsha fire scene, calls for urgent support for victims

Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has visited the scenes of two devastating fire incidents in Onitsha, Anambra State.

The fires, which broke out separately at the Electronics Market Plaza on Iweka Road and a warehouse at Ifejirika Street, Main Market, resulted in losses worth billions of naira.

The Anambra State Fire Service battled for hours to contain the flames, but traders suffered severe losses.

Expressing deep sympathy for the affected traders, Obi emphasized the devastating impact of the fires on livelihoods.

“It was a deeply painful experience to witness the enormous loss suffered by traders at such a challenging time. Without a doubt, several billions of naira worth of goods and properties were lost. The scale of the destruction was overwhelming,” Obi stated.

He called on all levels of government, corporate organizations, and well-meaning individuals to assist the victims in rebuilding their businesses.

He said: “In moments like this, our shared humanity must prevail. Let us come together to restore hope, rebuild livelihoods, and reaffirm the spirit of community that defines us.”

During his visit, Obi held private discussions with market leaders and some of the most affected traders, reassuring them of his commitment to offering support in any way he could.

He also commended the Anambra State Fire Service for their efforts in containing the fire, despite challenges in their operations.
