The Anambra State chapter of the Labour Party, LP, has dismissed concerns that the defection of its 2023 presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, would weaken the party’s strength in the state, insisting that LP remains solid, united and well-positioned for the 2027 general elections.
The party’s position was contained in a press statement issued on Tuesday by the Anambra State Chairman of the Labour Party, Comrade Peter Okoye, following Obi’s defection to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, on December 31, 2025.
Okoye assured party members, stakeholders and supporters that the exit of Obi, who hails from Anambra State, alongside some other individuals, would not in any material way diminish the party’s structure or electoral prospects in the state.
According to him, the Labour Party is not built around any single personality but on ideology, institutional strength, collective sacrifice and the will of the people.
“The strength of the Labour Party in Anambra State remains firmly rooted in its robust grassroots base, disciplined membership and functional party structures across wards, local governments and zones,” the statement read.
The party chairman said LP in Anambra remains united, stable and focused, stressing that its enduring connection with the masses continues to sustain its relevance and growth.
He further noted that the party’s national leadership remains intact, with the Governor of Abia State serving as leader of the party and Senator Nenadi Usman providing direction at the national level, a development he said has ensured clarity, cohesion and organisational stability nationwide.
Okoye disclosed that the Labour Party has recently undergone a period of consolidation and internal strengthening, with revitalised leadership organs and renewed grassroots mobilisation across Anambra State.
He added that the party is now more disciplined, resilient and strategically positioned to compete effectively in the 2027 general elections at both state and national levels.
Calling on party members to remain steadfast, the LP chairman urged them to stay actively engaged, noting that current challenges would only strengthen the party’s resolve to promote integrity, accountability, inclusion and people-oriented governance.
He also commended the party’s youths, women and grassroots mobilisers for their dedication and sacrifices in sustaining the ideals of the Labour Party.
Reaffirming LP’s commitment to providing a credible alternative to Ndi Anambra and Nigerians, Okoye said the party remains open to new members who share its vision of justice, equity and good governance.
“As we move forward, we are confident, united and resolute. The foundation has been laid, the house is in order, and the momentum is steadily building,” he said, expressing optimism that the Labour Party would emerge as a formidable force in Anambra State and across Nigeria in 2027.
