Petrol Price Soars To ₦900 In Edo As Dangote Revises Rate Again

Fuel marketers in Edo State have raised the pump price of petrol to as high as ₦900 per litre, barely hours after Dangote Petroleum Refinery announced a nationwide price review following the end of the festive season.

According to The Nation, a visit to several filling stations in Benin City and environs on Tuesday revealed that retailers were selling Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) between ₦850 and ₦900 per litre, up from the previous range of ₦739 to ₦795 per litre.

The development follows an announcement by Dangote Petroleum Refinery on Monday evening that it had increased the gantry price of petrol from ₦699 per litre to ₦799 per litre.

According to the company, the revised price reflects a return to normal market conditions after the festive season, when special support measures were deployed to cushion consumers during Christmas and New Year celebrations.

The refinery said the earlier price cut was temporary and aimed at helping Nigerians cope with high spending during the celebrations.

It added that this is the second festive period initiative undertaken to ease the economic burden on the public.

Based on the refined gantry rate of ₦799 per litre, the expected pump price at Major Oil Marketers’ Outlets (MRS) nationwide was placed at about ₦839 per litre.

However, in Edo State, motorists are now encountering even higher local retail rates, with some stations quoting up to N900 per litre.

The sharp increase comes as Nigerians continue to grapple with cost‑of‑living pressures. Road users and commuters in Benin City expressed dismay at the sudden spike.
