Details have emerged from a closed-door meeting between a delegation of the Governance Advisory Council (GAC) and Lagos State House of Assembly and Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa.

A statement made available to Naijaonpoint on Friday, which was signed by Eromosele Ebhomele, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, shared that the meeting, which took place in private on Thursday, led to a productive conversation about the proposed Lagos Electrification Agency Law, which has recently advanced to the second reading stage during the plenary session.

The group from the GAC present at the session included Cardinal James Odumbaku, Senator Anthony Adefuye, Otunba Henry Ajomale, Dr. Yomi Finnih, and Otunba Femi Pedro.

It could be recalled that on Tuesday, June 25, Obasa assigned the Lagos Electricity bill to the Committee on Energy and Mineral Resources with a deadline of two weeks for the committee to report back to the House.

This decision was made following a debate among lawmakers during the session on the bill’s merits and drawbacks, which aims to amend the Lagos Electric Power Reform Law, 2018, to establish and manage the Lagos Electricity Market.

The proposed legislation aims to create a comprehensive regulatory structure for the electricity market, focusing on both commercial and technical aspects. Its primary goal is to guarantee dependable and widespread access to electricity for all State residents.

Additionally, the bill aims to set up the Lagos State Electrification Fund to provide consistent electricity services to areas in the State that are currently underserved.

Speaking about the bill, the chairman of the Committee on Energy and Mineral Resources, Hon. Sobur Oluwa, had said it was “very essential as it gives room for Lagos State to regulate its power supply and transmit electricity at its own pace.”
