Pixel phones' battery charging limit feature reaching some users

The first stable Android 15 update for Pixel phones did not include the battery charging limit feature available in previous betas. However, the original plan was for it to arrive later. Now some Pixel users are reporting that they are receiving the new option on their devices.

The first reports regarding the battery charging limit feature for Pixel phones surfaced in July. A few weeks later, Google implemented it in Android QPR1 Beta 2. As part of QPR1 beta, it was believed that the option would arrive in December with the next Pixel Feature Drop. It appears that Google has not further delayed the implementation and has already started to roll it out.

Google is reportedly rolling out the Battery Charging Limit feature on Pixel phones

Yesterday, Google began rolling out the November 2024 security patch for Android 15. After installing the update, some users received the feature on their devices, according to reports. However, the battery charging limit option is not available for everyone, which suggests that the rollout could take place as a server-side update. The feature is not exclusive to the latest Pixel 9 and Pixel 9 Pro devices, so you’ll find it on all models that are still receiving support.

Telegram user @SlimRock shared screenshots of the option available on their Pixel phone after installing the latest AP3A.241105.007 build. Interestingly, Google didn’t mention anything about the battery charging limit option in the changelog for the latest Pixel security patch. It’s possible that they were already planning to roll it out by now via a server-side change.

The battery charging limit will be available as another option under Battery settings, just below Adaptive Battery. If you enable it, your Pixel phone will only charge up to 80% of its maximum capacity. This helps maintain battery health for longer, as it avoids constantly completing charge cycles (charging from 0% to 100%). Remember that manufacturers measure the lifespan of their batteries in charging cycles. The cell gradually loses capacity when it reaches a certain cycle limit.

The feature is especially useful if 80% of your device’s battery is enough to last you through the day. Otherwise, it can be annoying, and even counterproductive for the battery, to charge your phone two or more times a day. Anyway, it’s always good news to receive more options that fit the use you give to your device.
