The Plateau State Government has dismissed widespread rumours alleging that Governor Caleb Mutfwang has defected to the Young Progressives Party, describing the claim as false and malicious.
In a statement issued on Friday, the Director of Press and Public Affairs, Dr Gyang Bere, said the report was “a blatant lie, a shameless concoction peddled by desperate mischief makers” seeking to mislead the public and cause political confusion.
Bere stressed that the governor remains committed to his mandate and has not joined any other political party.
The statement read, “Governor Mutfwang has not defected to the Young Progressives Party. Where and when there is any change in status, be assured that Governor Mutfwang will utilise official and verified communication channels to inform the people of Plateau State and all well-wishers.”
The government urged residents to disregard the claim and maintain focus on ongoing development strides across the state.
“We urge supporters, well-wishers, and all patriotic citizens of Plateau State to disregard this falsehood in its entirety. Remain steadfast, vigilant, and united in the collective mission of safeguarding and advancing the Plateau project,” the statement said.
Bere added that under the governor’s leadership, Plateau remains “safe, stable, and steadily rising brighter, stronger, and more resilient.”
Rumours of the governor’s purported defection have circulated for months, with mixed reactions from some members of the All Progressives Congress.
However, Mutfwang, elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, has consistently maintained that he remains a loyal member of the PDP.
He reaffirmed that position again on Friday, insisting that he has not left the party.
