The Anambra State Police Command has taken custody of a 38-year-old man, Samuel Ekezie, who allegedly staged his own abduction in a bid to extort money from his family.

According to police authorities, Ekezie faked his kidnap on 15 August 2025 and sent a text message to his relatives, demanding a ransom of ₦20 million for his supposed release.

He was later tracked down and arrested through intelligence-led operations in Rivers State by personnel of the 302 Artillery Regiment of the Nigerian Army in Onitsha, before being handed over to the police on 15 September.

Police spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, said investigations are ongoing and assured that justice will be served.
