The Kano State Police Command has established a panel to investigate the violent clash that erupted in the Kofar-Kudu area of Kano metropolis between supporters of the deposed 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero, and those loyal to the reinstated 16th Emir, Muhammadu Sanusi II.

The command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, confirmed the development to Punch on Monday, stating that the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, had ordered a full-scale investigation into the fracas.

“The CP, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, has set up a panel to investigate the altercation,” Haruna stated in a WhatsApp message sent to Punch.

Although details remain sketchy, the confrontation reportedly occurred on Sunday when Emir Bayero’s convoy attempted to pass through the Kofar-Kudu axis en route from his Mandawari residence to the Nassarawa mini-palace.

Eyewitnesses who spoke with the platform allege that Bayero’s entourage encountered fierce resistance from suspected loyalists of Emir Sanusi, resulting in damage to property and injuries to palace guards.

A resident who witnessed the clash revealed that hoodlums allegedly vandalised the main gate of the Gidan Rumfa Palace, inflicted injuries on palace guards, and smashed police vehicles.

“The timely and prompt response of the police prevented the incident from degenerating into a full-blown bloody clash,” the eyewitness said, noting that officers swiftly deployed tear gas to disperse the opposing groups.

The altercation is the latest in the lingering royal power struggle following the Kano State Government’s decision in May 2024 to depose Emir Bayero and reinstate Emir Sanusi II.

Since then, the two monarchs have been operating from separate palaces, Sanusi at the Gidan Rumfa main palace and Bayero at the Nassarawa mini-palace, while court battles and political tensions continue to cloud the emirate.
