Imam Muhammad Murtadha Obhakhobo, the Chief Imam of Uromi Central Mosque in Edo State, has refuted claims by the police that he was rescued from captivity, insisting he regained his freedom after paying a ₦6.5 million ransom.

Daily Trust had earlier reported that the cleric was kidnapped on July 9 along the Ubiaja-Illushi Road in Edo Central. His abductors reportedly demanded a ₦30 million ransom for his release.

In a statement released shortly after his freedom, the Edo State Police Command, through its spokesperson CSP Moses Yamu, claimed that the Imam’s release was secured due to “sustained pressure” mounted by police operatives.

However, during an interactive session with journalists, the Chief Imam gave a different account, directly contradicting the police version.

“I am Imam Muhammad Murtadha Obhakhobo, the Chief Imam of Uromi Central Mosque in Edo Central. I was kidnapped on July 9, 2025, along the Ubiaja-Illushi road,” he stated.

“I got myself released by paying ₦6.5 million on July 13, but I was shocked to read in the news that I was rescued by the police,” he said.

The Imam explained that after returning from captivity, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Uromi Division visited him to gather information on his ordeal — which he willingly provided. However, he said he was dismayed to see the police “trying to take credit for doing nothing.”

“My release was as a result of private efforts and the payment of substantial ransom and not the efforts of the police,” he added.

Despite his frustration, Imam Obhakhobo expressed gratitude to those who offered prayers and support during his abduction.
