Reality TV star, Tochi has raised alarm over the growing trend of misusing police officers as personal aides rather than allowing them to focus on their core responsibility of protecting citizens and maintaining order.

Naijaonpoint reports that the former Big Brother Naija housemate said the Nigeria Police Force, established to uphold law and ensure national security, is increasingly being reduced to roles meant for private security services.

According to him, officers are often seen escorting individuals to social events, opening car doors, taking pictures, and serving as status symbols for the wealthy and influential.

He said this culture not only undermines the dignity of the Force but also erodes public trust in the institution.

While police deployment in high-risk areas may be understandable, Tochi stressed that it is wasteful and inappropriate to assign multiple officers for social gatherings or private functions.

He wrote: “I have to say this but it is deeply concerning how the Nigeria Police Force, an institution created to uphold law, protect citizens, and ensure national security, is increasingly being misused for personal convenience. Police officers are now reduced to roles of private security, following individuals to social events, opening car doors, snapping pictures, and serving as status symbols. This careless practice undermines the dignity of the Force, distracts officers from their core duty, and erodes public trust. Private security services exist for such functions, not the Police. The Police is a professional institution dedicated to public safety, not personal showmanship. For the sake of justice, order, and respect, this misuse must stop.

“In other countries, you can never see citizens, whether wealthy or famous, parading with police officers as personal aides. Even their government officials’ protocols dress in casual clothing. Yet in Nigeria, it has become common for anyone with a little money to reduce police officers to drivers, doormen, and bodyguards, even picture buddies for the gram. This practice is not only undignified but also a misuse of public resources. Arguments about “insecurity” cannot justify it; there are individuals wealthier and more influential who move with discretion and private security, without carrying a convoy of police officers.

“It is heartbreaking to see the Force, meant to protect all citizens, treated as a personal possession. This culture must stop if we truly want to restore respect and professionalism to the Nigeria Police Force.

“Deploying one or two officers when visiting a genuinely high-risk area may be understandable not when you’re attending the wedding of Chidera and Femi in Lekki Phase One. Use private security if you’re feeling like Elon Musk’s long-lost cousin. Packing an entire police unit for such purposes is just wrong.”
