The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the removal and sanction of a Divisional Police Officer following allegations that a man was extorted after rushing a dying patient to a hospital in Asaba.
In a statement seen by Dockaysworld, the police public relations officer, Bright Edafe, said the complainant has been contacted, the DPO involved removed and sanctioned, and all money allegedly collected from the man refunded.
The police update followed a viral social media post in which the man recounted how he rushed a young man who collapsed on the road to a hospital earlier this year after seeking medical advice, while others walked past.
He said the victim died on arrival at the hospital and that he requested that the police be informed since he did not know the deceased and was only trying to help.
According to the account, he was taken to the GRA Police Station in Asaba to report the incident but was instead accused of murder, with his statement taken under caution.
He alleged that the then DPO threatened to “deal” with him for acting like “Jesus,” despite confirmation from the deceased’s family that their son had an underlying medical condition.
The man also claimed that his bank account was emptied as bail money before his release, leaving him with only N2,000, and that it took the intervention of a senior government official to prevent him from being charged.
The Delta State Police Command, however, said the matter has been addressed, with disciplinary action taken against the officer involved and the complainant fully refunded.
