The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has accused top Nigerian politicians of bankrolling terrorism in the country.
The group claimed recent revelations from Sahel leaders and a Canadian court ruling have confirmed that political figures and parties are behind the operations of Boko Haram, ISWAP, and other armed groups.
In a statement on Friday, IPOB spokesperson, Emma Powerful, alleged that the evidence “conclusively identified Nigerian politicians and political parties as complicit in terror financing.”
He insisted that those same politicians were behind the 2017 proscription of IPOB to cover up their own involvement in violence.
The group pointed to the June 2025 ruling of the Federal Court of Canada which upheld a decision that the two main political parties in Nigeria — APC and PDP — had engaged in conduct amounting to terrorism and political subversion.
The case involved Douglas Egharevba, a Nigerian who was denied asylum after the court said his membership of the PDP made him inadmissible under immigration law.
According to the ruling, it cited incidents of ballot rigging, voter intimidation, and politically motivated killings linked to the parties.
Emma Powerful also accused Nigerian courts and sections of the media of helping to sustain what he described as a propaganda campaign against IPOB and its detained leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
According to him, “these are the shameless men who trade in blood and destruction, yet call themselves political leaders.”
The group further alleged that while repentant terrorists enjoy amnesty and stipends, its leader remains in detention despite multiple court rulings ordering his release.
IPOB maintained that Kanu’s continued incarceration is a deliberate ploy to prevent the truth about terror sponsors from being exposed.
It could be recalled that in August 2025, human rights lawyer Femi Falana challenged the APC and PDP to prove they are not terrorist organisations. He made the statement after the Canadian court ruling declared both parties culpable in acts of political terrorism.
