The 2024 Ondo State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Agboola Ajayi, is reportedly preparing to leave the party for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ajayi had earlier withdrawn his case in the Supreme Court where he was challenging the victory of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of APC. He said the decision was taken after wide consultations with his family, legal team and associates.
Governor Aiyedatiwa, reacting to the development, revealed that Ajayi had personally assured him of plans to rejoin the APC. According to the governor: “In fact, Hon. Agboola Ajayi has told me personally that he is coming to join the APC. I am waiting for him so that we can work together to build a greater Ondo State.”
Sources close to the politician suggest that Ajayi’s move is also tied to his interest in supporting President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027. POLITICS NIGERIA learnt that the development has unsettled the PDP in the state, as Ajayi was one of its strongest figures in the last election.
Recall that the Supreme Court had dismissed appeals filed by three political parties against Governor Aiyedatiwa’s victory in the 2024 Ondo governorship poll. Ajayi, the PDP candidate, was among those who challenged the election result before later withdrawing his appeal.
