The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a nationwide directive to all commands to immediately reinforce security for the judiciary, including courts and judges, following explicit instructions from the Presidency.
The order, communicated via a wireless message on December 8, 2025, from the Inspector-General of Police’s Secretariat in Abuja, highlights a new focus on protecting key judicial figures and institutions.
According to Sahara Reporters, the directive, addressed to senior police officers across all 36 state commands, the FCT, and specialized units, emphasized the critical need to prioritize judicial protection.
The IG Secretariat instructed commands without existing Judges Protection Units (JPUs) to establish them immediately.
Officers are required to ensure that all judges and court facilities within their Area of Responsibility (AOR) are adequately protected at all times.
Police commands were told to confirm compliance with the directive without waiting for reminders, underscoring the urgency and importance placed on the order. The communication was marked “very important” and “immediate.”
This focused security reinforcement for the judiciary aligns with the President’s broader directive to withdraw police personnel from general escort and guard duties for Very Important Persons (VIPs).
The recent withdrawal of police personnel from non-essential security details is part of a reform strategy to free up police manpower for core policing duties and address national security challenges.
