Nigeria has been thrown into mourning following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away in London today at about 4:30 p.m, after a prolonged illness.
The announcement was made in a statement issued by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who expressed deep sorrow over the loss of his predecessor. President Tinubu described Buhari as a statesman who served Nigeria with courage, discipline, and a commitment to national service.
In a move reflecting the significance of the loss, President Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to immediately travel to the United Kingdom to accompany the body of the late leader back to Nigeria.
The President has also reached out personally to Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the widow of the former President, to offer his condolences and assure her of the nation’s support during this difficult time.
As part of the national mourning, President Tinubu has ordered that Nigerian flags be flown at half-mast across the country until further notice.
Muhammadu Buhari served as Nigeria’s elected President from 2015 to 2023, after earlier ruling the country as military Head of State from January 1984 to August 1985.
