President Bola Tinubu has concluded plans to appoint new ambassadors for Nigeria, two years after the country recalled its envoys.
According to Arise News, the new ambassadors for critical, strategic nations may be announced as early as next week.
Naijaonpoint understands that security services have been directed to conclude vetting of the ambassadorial nominees immediately.
It was gathered that President Tinubu has ordered a “final cleanup” of the list of ambassadorial nominees ahead of its imminent release.
The imminent list is expected to address the diplomatic gaps in some of the country’s management of complex international issues.
The development is occurring at a time when Nigeria is embroiled in a diplomatic row with the United States of America, following the designation of the nation as a country of particular concern by President Donald Trump of America.
Trump, in his submission, had alleged that an organized genocide is being carried out against Christians in Nigeria by terrorists and bandits.
The Nigerian government has, however, debunked the claims, insisting on several occasions that there is no targeted killing of Christians in the country.
The government insisted that the activities of the terrorists have no ethnic or religious affiliation, adding that the claims by Trump “do not reflect the situation on the ground.”
The appointment of new ambassadors is expected to address agitations which have arisen after Tinubu recalled all ambassadors from Nigeria’s 109 foreign missions, including 76 embassies, 22 high commissions, and 11 consulates, as part of a “comprehensive diplomatic review.”
The absence of ambassadors is argued to have weakened Nigeria’s international visibility.
