The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), the All Progressives Congress (APC), the Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) picked their candidates during primary elections held on Saturday and Tuesday at various venues in Awka, the state capital. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had set a 10 April deadline for political parties to complete their primary elections. The electoral body scheduled the governorship election itself for 8 November. The incumbent governor, Chukwuma Soludo, emerged the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) at the primary election held on Saturday. The primary was held at the Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka, amidst tight security and under the watch of the officials of INEC. Mr Soludo being the sole aspirant standing for the primary election, delegates expressed their choices through a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ vote. In the end, the governor, who is seeking a second term, polled 3,171 votes from the 3,175 accredited delegates across the 326 political wards in the state. Soludo was born into the family of Pa Simeon Soludo. His mother passed away during the Nigerian Civil War when he was nearly eight years old. He attended Uga Boys High School, where he served as senior prefect. He pursued higher education at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), earning a First Class Honours degree in Economics in 1984. Furthermore, he continued at UNN, obtaining a Master’s degree in 1987 and a Ph.D. in 1989, graduating as the best student at all three levels. During his tenure as CBN Governor, Soludo faced criticism over certain banking policies and the handling of the banking consolidation process. Additionally, his political transitions between parties and election campaigns have been subjects of public debate. In November 2022, Soludo publicly criticized Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, and his predecessor as Governor of Anambra State, stating that Obi could not win the 2023 presidential election.
