Protesters block Third Mainland bridge over demolition of houses in Oworonshoki

Protesters on Monday blocked the inward lane of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos over the demolition of houses in Oworonshoki.

In the early hours of Saturday, a combined enforcement team of the Lagos State Government began removing all unapproved buildings along the Lekki and Iyana Oworonshoki coastal lines.

Affected residents, who turned out in large numbers on Monday morning, accused the state government of executing the demolitions without adequate notice or compensation, leaving many families homeless.

The demonstration, which began at dawn, caused heavy traffic gridlock, leaving motorists stranded and forcing commuters to seek alternative routes into the mainland.

During the protest, the demonstrators confronted Moshood Jimoh, the Lagos Commissioner of Police, declaring they would not disperse until demolition equipment was withdrawn from Oworonshoki.

Security operatives were later deployed to restore order and reopen the road.

The Lagos State Government has yet to issue an official statement on the protest or the demolition exercise.
